Here are some important facts you need to know before you buy a horse from an auction.
While there are some honest sellers that will represent their horse truthfully, most people who are selling horses at horse sales are doing it to make living.
Many of them are unscrupulous and have no remorse about their dishonest practice either.
Many of these horses are purchased at a sale merely weeks before and taken to a sale such as this and are advertised as having been owned for long periods.
Many of these horses are in fact drugged with Bute and other non-testable drugs.
Many of these dealers or horse traders will lie about a horse's history.
Something the public does not know about horse sales is that the owners themselves are bidding against you.
There are many auction houses that are involved with this practice.
The cues are subtle but they are there.
Some sellers plant fictitious people to run the bid up on their horses.
There are also horses brought to the sale that never are intended to be sold only for the appearance of bringing a high dollar amount.
Said horses never change hands.
Horse traders know how to read people like a book.
They are practiced in the skill of knowing when people are at their limit.
If one thinks that online bidding is a failsafe they are sadly mistaken.
Horse traders don't care if they sell their horse at one sale or another sale so they can run the bid up as much as they like to get what they feel is fair out of that equine individual.
As I stated there are some honest individuals who are truly selling their horses and represent them honestly.
The sad fact is those people are few and far between.
If you're going to purchase a horse at the auction be prepared and forewarned.
Only spend as much as you're willing to lose.
Unfortunately horses have become a commodity and are being sold for slaughter and are shipped to Canada for human consumption.
I recommend you do your research on the individual selling as well as the equine you intend to purchase.
These practices are not limited to a single sale barn but every sale barn from the smallest to the most expensive and high dollar sales.
I wish you well in your search for your equine partner.
But beware!
